What is an Avoided Conversion project?

Avoided Conversion (or Active Conservation) forest carbon projects create durable, high-quality credits that are in high demand across compliance and voluntary markets. A carbon conservation easement unlocks substantial value, and Green Assets boasts the highest credits-per-acre of any U.S. forest carbon developer.

Carbon Conservation Easement

Record a 40-year (voluntary market) or 100-year (compliance market) conservation easement preventing conversion to an appraised highest-and-best use.

Forest Certification

Project area must be certified by ATFS, SFI, or FSC. No planting or management of non-native species.

Sustainable timber management

Timber harvest can continue, within the forest’s annual growth. Green Assets will provide maximum allowable harvest and monitor to ensure compliance.

FAQ

Green Assets

Is my property eligible for a Green Assets project?

We target landowners with 5,000 acres and above, then we assess geography, forest data, initial eligibility, and other factors to determine feasibility. .

How much does Green Assets charge for a Feasibility Study?

For eligible landowners, Green Assets offers our proprietary and confidential Feasibility Study completely free of charge.

How long does a carbon project last?

40+ years in the voluntary market, and about 100+ years in the compliance market.

How long will it take for me to get paid?

Approximately 2-3 years from initial contracting until first monetization. Typically payments are annual throughout the project term.

How much will it cost me to implement a project on my property?

$0. Green Assets funds up-front project costs and is only reimbursed after credits are issued, marketed, and sold (…when the project is successful).

Can I still harvest my timber? Are there any harvest restrictions?

Yes, you can still harvest commercially, conduct thinnings, and manage your forest sustainably. Green Assets can provide insight on applicable management activities by project type. And, we encourage proper forest management and stewardship.

Are there any harvest restrictions?

Generally, you can not harvest more than your forest grows in a given year. Compliance market projects face additional restrictions.

What if I don’t have 5,000 acres? Can I still work with Green Assets?

Yes! We are currently pre-enrolling smaller landowners (500 – 5,000 acres) into our Green Legacy program. Please submit your interest here, or email info@green-assets.com.

What happens in the event of a hurricane, or another natural disaster?

Natural disasters that negatively impact the project are typically covered by the “Buffer Pool”- an insurance mechanism hosted by the Registry, that most projects contribute credits to from each credit issuance.

Active Conservation

What is Active Conservation?

The Active Conservation and Sustainable Management on US Forestlands methodology was developed to bring the Avoided Conversion approach to the Voluntary Carbon Market. Green Assets co-authored the methodology with ACR, the first and most renowned carbon registry in the world. The Active Conservation methodology was published in 2023 after thorough technical and peer review. Active Conservation projects utilize a conservation easement to keep forestland as forestland – whether for timber management, recreation, legacy preservation, or ecosystem service generation.

How does Active Conservation differ from Avoided Conversion?

At their core, they are very similar – both methods prevent the conversion of forestland to an appraised highest and best use. The primary differences are in harvest management requirements and project length. Active Conservation projects have a 40-year project term, while Avoided Conversion have a 100-year project term.

Forest Carbon Projects

What are the types of forest carbon projects?

There are 3 primary forest project types – Reforestation, Improved Forest Management, and Avoided Conversion (or Active Conservation). Green Assets is the leading developer of Avoided Conversion projects but has deep experience with all project types.

How many acres are required to be in a carbon project?

Green Assets implements forest carbon programs for medium (500 – 5,000 acres) and large (5,000+ acres) private forest landowners. Contact us today to request a complimentary Feasibility Study.

What is the best forest type for a carbon project?

There is no “silver bullet” (or “green bullet”). Large, forested tracts with a diversity in age class, species, and soil type often make the best candidates for Avoided Conversion projects.

Carbon Markets

What is a carbon credit?

A carbon credit represents the verified equivalent of 1 metric ton of carbon dioxide sequestered from the atmosphere.

How do you create a carbon credit?

There are several methods approved by various registries, including forest carbon projects, industrial process improvements, and mine methane capture, among others. The number of credits a forest carbon project can generate is unique to the forest’s on-site stocking and growth.

Who buys carbon credits?

A wide variety of companies, universities, governments, NGOs, and other organization purchase carbon credits. Some buyers are required by state regulation to account for their emissions, while others voluntarily purchase credits to reduce their climate impact and account for emissions from operations.

How much is a carbon credit worth?

Carbon credits are market-based instruments whose value fluctuates with supply, demand, and other market factors. Green Assets is happy to take a look at your landholdings and provide a complimentary Feasibility Study.
