US airlines drop emissions lawsuit

Airlines for America (A4A), a group representing 14 major US airlines, has dropped its suit against the European Union (EU) regarding its emission regulations for all flights using European airports.

Under the EU’s Emissions Trading System, airlines will be required to surrender carbon permits to offset their emissions beginning this year.

The case was set to close this past Thursday. Most people expected the ruling to side with the EU, but it was certainly a surprise to see A4A drop the suit.

However, it is likely that the US government will step in to challenge airline emission regulation.

Other countries opposing the EU include China, Russia and India.
