US emissions down in 2011

According to the Energy Information Administration (EIA) the US saw a 2.4% cut in emissions during 2011-a decrease of 136 million metric tons.

As the economy rebounded in 2010 emissions rose, however 2011 saw economic growth as well as emissions reductions.

The increased production of renewable energy contributed to the decrease in emissions.

Solar generation grew nearly 50% in 2011, while hydroelectric and wind sectors increased 25% over the previous year.

The shift away from coal combustion towards cleaner burning natural gas power plants also helped bring down 2011’s total of over 500 million tons.
