Ontario may join California carbon market
Another Canadian province is looking at the possibility of linking with the California carbon market.
Ontario, one of Canada’s most heavily populated and highest emitting territories, is strategizing how to meet its target to reduce emission levels to 15% below 1990 levels by 2020.
The closure of old, inefficient coal-fired power plants will help, but additional reductions will need to be gained elsewhere.
News that Quebec may link with the California carbon market as early as this year may have contributed to Ontario’s decision to post a discussion paper on its Ministry of the Environment webpage.
Should Ontario elect to create a carbon market that conforms to California’s model, they would add extra volume to what is already the largest carbon market in North America.
